A NEW photography competition featuring Penang’s food, art, and natural landscapes has been launched as part of the state’s effort to promote tourism through creativity.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the “From Heritage to Adventure, Penang in Frames” Photography Competition aims to showcase Penang’s unique identity through the eyes of photographers.

“We are not just unveiling a competition, but we are launching a creative movement that celebrates Penang’s identity, its beauty, and its people through the power of photography,” he said during a press conference in Komtar today.

Wong said photography is one of the most impactful tools in promoting tourism, especially in capturing the attention of travellers around the world.

“When people decide where to go next, they don’t just read brochures, but they look at photos.

“A single captivating image, a vibrant mural, or a bowl of steaming laksa can inspire someone thousands of miles away to dream of visiting Penang,” he said.

He added that photographers play a vital role in telling Penang’s story.

The competition features three categories, namely Culture & Food, Arts & Lifestyle, and Nature & Adventure. Each of them reflects a different facet of Penang’s charm.

Wong expressed his gratitude to all partners and sponsors for their support of the competition, noting that the initiative reinforces Penang’s image as a hub for tourism and creativity.

“Penang is more than just a place to visit — it is a place to experience, to feel, and to capture; from heritage to adventure, from tradition to tomorrow,” he said.

Penang Photography Merchants Association (PPMA) president Low Chin Hin hoped to see an overwhelming response for the competition.

“They can capture using their smartphones, DSLR cameras or even drones. The competition period will be from this month until January 2026, while early submission is open now until Jan 15 next year, “ he said.

Among those present were Futuromic Photo AV Sdn Bhd Distributor for Nikon products senior marketing manager Alex Moh, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) senior manager Pauline Yoon, and other sponsors’ representatives.
