IN a major step forward, Penang Port Commission (PPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hwajing Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd to elevate Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) into a premier cruise homeport.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at SPCT, with PPC represented by its general manager, Datuk Dr Vijayaindiaran R. Viswalingam, and Hwajing Travel and Tours by its managing director, Kenny Cheong. The event was witnessed by PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.

In his address, Yeoh said the collaboration reflects PPC’s commitment to strengthening Penang’s status not only as a port of call but as a regional cruise hub offering world-class passenger experiences.

“This strategic partnership with Hwajing Travel and Tours is aimed at promoting Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal as a dedicated cruise homeport for the years 2025 to 2027.

Yeoh also revealed that PPC had signed another MoU with the India Port Association to encourage cruise ships from India to use SPCT as their main port of call.

“Additionally, PPC took part in the Seatrade Cruise Global 2025 programme in Miami, Florida, to further promote Penang and Malaysia as attractive cruise destinations,” he said.

Yeoh acknowledged Transport Minister Anthony Loke’s earlier assurance of the Federal Government’s support in strengthening Penang’s position in the regional cruise network.

“The minister emphasised Penang’s strategic importance and the need for ongoing improvements to port infrastructure and cruise-related services.

“He also noted that the post-pandemic recovery of the cruise industry presents a valuable opportunity to boost the local economy, generate employment and enhance Malaysia’s standing in global maritime tourism.

“PPC is fully committed to supporting the government’s vision by taking active steps to improve cruise operations through supportive policies, close collaboration with cruise operators, and continued infrastructure upgrades,” Yeoh added.

Another MoU was signed during the event between Hwajing Travel and Astro Ocean Cruises. Cheong represented Hwajing Travel while Astro Ocean Cruises was represented by its vice-president, Tong Jianfeng.

Through this partnership, Hwajing Travel and Astro Ocean Cruises will work together to bring the M/V Piano Land to Malaysia this December, marking its maiden voyage to the country.

The M/V Piano Land will offer two itineraries: a 3-day, 2-night cruise (Penang – Port Klang – Penang) and a 4-day, 3-night cruise covering Penang, Langkawi and Port Klang. Passengers will have the convenience of boarding from either Penang or Port Klang, catering to both Malaysian travellers and those from neighbouring countries.

Cheong shared that the arrival of the M/V Piano Land marks Hwajing’s second major international homeporting initiative, following the successful deployment of an Italian cruise liner last year.

“Looking ahead, Hwajing Travel remains committed to introducing the right products, reaching the right markets, and collaborating closely with both government and industry partners to firmly position Malaysia as a regional leader in cruise tourism,” he said.

“We believe our unique ‘Culture and Cruise’ model will drive strong demand for cruise travel in Malaysia and the wider region.

“The M/V Piano Land will operate with dual homeports in Port Klang and Penang, offering 12 sailings that include stops in Langkawi and Phuket, Thailand,” he added.
