Protecting places of worship is key to peaceful and harmonious living, says CM Chow

CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow has reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting the places of worship in Penang.

He also said that it has been the Penang government’s objective since 2008 that places of worship in the state should never undergo forced demolition or any kind of unfair treatment.

“Places of worship of all kinds play a vital role in creating a harmonious and peaceful environment.

“If there are premises that require assistance in terms of their land matters, we are here to assist, and we have developers who are willing to help us out in this matter as well.

“For the past 14 years or so, the state government has never forced such premises to vacate with immediate effect nor raise the need to carry out the demolition.

“This is our principle because we believe in creating a harmonious environment for our people. We will continue to do so for the benefit of all Penangites and our future generations,” Chow said after visiting the Sree Maha Devi Karumariamman Temple in Seberang Perai today.

Chow officially started his campaign on Nov 5 given the upcoming 15th General Election on Nov 19.

He will be contesting the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat.

Accompanying Chow earlier was Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, who said that the temple committee members have voiced out the need for a bigger space to conduct religious classes for the temple devotees, particularly for children.

“There is an empty land just opposite the temple. The developer (One City Development Sdn Bhd) doesn’t have any issues renting out the space to the temple.

“So, we hope to move ahead with the necessary procedures as soon as possible to benefit the temple devotees here,” Dr Ramasamy said.

Also present during the visit was state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee.
