AVID online gamers, especially those glued to the popular Honor of Kings, have a reason to cheer as the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) today has launched the Youth E-Sports Challenge 2021.

This is PYDC’s joint effort with SEGi University and Colleges (SEGi) and Realme Malaysia to promote togetherness among youth and develop interpersonal skills in this 21st century. It is also sponsored by Magnus Games Studio Sdn Bhd, Ticket2U Sdn Bhd and OYU Fish Skin.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, who officially launched the competition via Zoom today, said organising such a competition was timely and would be a boost to develop the youth for their future in the e-sports industry.

“Honor of Kings is very popular across the globe, and it is believed that prizes worth over RM30,000 are expected to be won.

“Thus, I would like to urge all the young people across the country and more particularly youth from Penang to take up this opportunity and showcase your skills and talent.

“E-Sports tests the players’ intelligence, teamwork, communication, strategic critical thinking and their will.

“Therefore, to compete in this competition, one must acquire the strenuous and systematic discipline as an e-sports player as these are important attributes that can lead to victory,” Soon said during the launching ceremony via Zoom from Komtar today.

The competition is open to those aged 15 to 35. Registration is open from today (May 27) to June 20 and is expected to start on June 24 and end on July 24.

Meanwhile, SEGi Group of Colleges chief executive officer Stella Lau Kah Wai said when students are generally engaged in online games, they become more skilled while working under tremendous pressure as well.

“This can be an interesting career path too. It is simply amazing to witness the amount of attention and detailing that individuals, especially youth, tend to put while playing these games.

“For passionate gamers, that’s the kind of character they would build, which will eventually lead them to success in this field,” Lau said.

Also present during the virtual ceremony was PYDC general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling.
