Registered My30 Mutiara pass holders hit new heights in Penang, says exco man

THE My30 Mutiara pass that was introduced by the Penang government this year has seen an overwhelming response in terms of increased users, close to hitting the 10,000-mark throughout the state.

Effective March 1 this year, the pass holders are entitled to enjoy free Rapid bus rides for the rest of 2021.

State Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said in March this year, there were only 2,300 holders, but now there are about 7,500 of them.

“This clearly proves that the scheme is positively received by Penangites and that they have shown interest in using public transport to move around in the state.

“The Penang government’s decision to introduce this initiative was also in line with the Penang2030 vision for a ‘Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’,” Zairil (PH – Tanjung Bungah) said during his speech at the state Engagement Session between the state executive councillors and the assemblymen at St Giles Wembley Hotel today.

Previosuly, Zairil had also mentioned that the initiative was aimed to reduce the financial burden of transportation for Penangites amid the Covid-19 pandemic and to encourage the use of the public transportation provided.

“The fight against the pandemic is far from over, and through these efforts, the state government will continue to prioritise the well-being of the people as well as play its part to reduce pollution that can be avoided,” he added.

Under the initiative, Zairil recently also said that the state government would bear a cost of RM3 million, which is equivalent to 10 months’ worth of renewal fee for 10,000 pass holders.

Those living in Penang with a Malaysian identity card would be entitled to obtain the pass.

For first-time pass holders, they only have to pay a total of RM10, comprising RM5 for the card processing fee and another RM5 for the card’s purse value.
