Remembering the sacrifices of war heroes

MEMBERS of the Penang Veterans’ Association (PVA) took their time off on this breezy morning to attend a wreath-laying ceremony to honour the fallen heroes who died defending the country during the wars.

Held at the Cenotaph (Penang War Memorial) in Esplanade, George Town, veteran army officers from all walks of life and leaders got together to hold a solemn ceremony in remembrance of their sacrifices.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was also among the attendees, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the veterans and heroes who had fought hard for the country.

“We are 104 years now since the end of World War 1, 77 years since the end of World War 2 and 63 years since the end of the Malayan Emergency.

“We understand that these military conflicts brought us nothing but harm, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of human lives as well as the deterioration of the economy then.

“In the last 63 years, we have enjoyed peace and harmony, thanks to the sacrifices and efforts of those who stood for freedom and sovereignty,” he said in his speech during the 21st Remembrance Day.

Looking forward, Chow said it is necessary for all now to promote the common values of humanity and foster peace and stability.

“We must unite to resist divisive elements in our community.

“As a peace-loving state, Penang will continue its efforts to ensure peace reigns supreme,” he emphasised.

PVA president Mej (R) R. Sivarajan said he understood the grief of those fallen heroes’ families.

“They have served the country for the cause of freedom.

“We will always remember and honour their sacrifices,” he said while hoping that the younger generation can value the contributions made by the heroes of yesteryear.

Among those present were former Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai, High Commissioner of Australia to Malaysia Dr Justin Lee, High Commissioner of Canada to Malaysia Wayne Robson, ambassador of Nepal to Malaysia Dilli Raj Paudell, KD Sri Pinang commanding officer Commander Lui Poh Hin, Integrated Area Defence System Butterworth Representatives of the Commander Mej Doug Webster, Royal Australian Air Force 19 Squadron commanding officer Wing Commander Darren Prior.
