THE Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) has been urged to review its decision to change the traffic flow at part of the Pusat Perniagaan Maju Utama Kampung Baru in Berapit.

The traffic flow has been diverted from a two-way to a one-way system.

Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee said it involves the two junctions at the business centre, namely Lorong Maju Utama 1 and Jalan Kampung Baru Satu.

“Based on the new changes, Lorong Maju Utama 1 is used for vehicles to enter the business centre area from Jalan Kampung Baru (main road). Meanwhile, Jalan Kampung Baru Satu is used as the exit road from the business centre.

“The one-way traffic flow for the two junctions was implemented on April 5. But, it is temporarily put on hold starting from today after I lodged a complaint to the city council.

“As the elected representative for this area, I also wasn’t informed by MBSP about this matter.

“Such decision from MBSP to implement the one-way traffic flow for Lorong Maju Utama 1 and Jalan Kampung Baru Satu can pose a danger to the motorists here.

“This is because motorists around here are already familiar with the two-way system involving the two junctions.

“There is also no official announcement from MBSP to inform the local residents here. So, it will be very dangerous for the motorists as these two junctions are very busy during peak hours,” Heng told a press conference at the Pusat Perniagaan Maju Utama Kampung Baru in Berapit today.

Also present were Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) councillors Bernard Cheen Goon Hooi and Rachel Teh Chuann Yien.

Heng also urged the city council to inform the local residents there once they decide on the matter.

“MBSP can inform the public properly by using the social media platform and putting a clear and visible signboard.

“The current signboard that they put is not too clear and the letters are too small to read.

“They can also invite reporters to announce this matter as I did today,” she added.
