THE Paya Terubong voluntary fire station, which has been damaged by fallen trees due to heavy rain and thunderstorm on June 1, will start its repair works next week.

Paya Terubong Voluntary Fire Brigade Association chairman Cheah Kok Beng said repair works on the station’s rooftop must be done soonest, especially during the current rainy weather.

He pointed out that the parked fire engines on the premises are being exposed to the rain and sunlight while stressing that immediate repair works need to be expedited.

“We estimate that the rooftop works to cost us about RM200,000 due to the rising cost of materials.

“Our repair fund is still not sufficient as of now, but repair works will begin in stages as we need a proper rooftop in our station.

“As it progresses, we will continue to seek more donations from other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or any kind donors,” he told Buletin Mutiara.

Cheah estimated that the whole repair work, including other parts of the station, would cost RM250,000.

“We have even spread the message around on our social media, hoping kind donors can step forward to assist us,” he added.

Cheah also thanked Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Bukit Gelugor parliamentary service centre, Air Itam and Paya Terubong service centres for contributing a total of RM160,000 to the Paya Terubong Voluntary Fire Brigade Association.

The fallen trees have damaged parts of the fire station.

“I also hope that more elected representatives from other constituencies can chip in to help us too,” he said, hoping that the Paya Terubong and Air Itam areas can be served efficiently during any emergency.
