BERAPIT assemblyman Heng Lee Lee today pressed for clarity on the operational capacity of the newly upgraded Hospital Seberang Jaya, which was completed in April 2025.
Responding on behalf of the chief minister, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen (PH – Padang Lalang) confirmed that the hospital’s total bed capacity now stands at 729, but only 512 beds, equivalent to 70 per cent, are currently open and in use.
He explained that staffing shortages and ongoing procurement of medical equipment have delayed full utilisation.
“The state government, through the state Health Department, will continue to follow up on the matter to ensure that the operations of the upgraded Seberang Jaya Hospital can be carried out at an optimal level,” Gooi said.
In her supplementary question, Heng asked for a clear timeline to achieve full capacity, as well as the percentage of new positions filled for doctors, nurses, and support staff.
She stressed the importance of ensuring adequate manpower to match the upgraded facilities.
Gooi, while acknowledging the constraints, emphasised that the state’s broader vision is not merely to achieve 100% bed occupancy but to foster a healthier population.
“If we look at the overall situation in public healthcare, it is my wish that bed capacity does not reach 100 per cent. I want the people of Penang to be much healthier.
“That would be the worst-case scenario if all our beds reach 100 per cent,” he remarked.
