SGGS marks 140 years of excellence with gala celebration

ONE of Penang’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions, St George’s Girls’ School (SGGS), commemorated its 140th anniversary today with a grand celebration highlighting its legacy of academic excellence and character development.

 

Located along Macalister Road, SGGS has stood as a pillar of all-girls education since its founding in 1885.

 

This evening, the school community — past and present — gathered at the Raia Inn Penang in Bayan Lepas for the SGGS Gala Night, a highlight of the anniversary festivities.

The gala featured captivating performances by the school’s band and orchestra, alongside a special appearance by popular Malaysian singer Ezlynn, much to the delight of students, alumni, teachers, and invited guests.

SGGS principal Sithi Junaithal Banu Mohamed Sultan described the event as a tribute to the school’s enduring spirit and legacy.

“Tonight, we come together as a school community, past and present, to honour a legacy built on faith, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

 

“Since its establishment in 1885, SGGS has grown from humble beginnings into a school of prestige, known for its strong academic record, its commitment to character development, and its unwavering spirit of sisterhood.

 

“This celebration is more than a milestone; it is a tribute to every student who once walked these halls with dreams in her heart, to every teacher who gave more than just lessons, and to every parent, friend, and supporter who believed in our mission.

 

“As we look back on 140 years of tradition, triumphs, and transformation, may we also look ahead with courage and conviction, continuing to build a school that nurtures not just minds, but hearts,” said Sithi in her speech.

 

SGGS Gala Night was also graced by the presence of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

 

Also present were SGGS alumni representative Shariffah Afifah Syed Abbas and SGGS Parents and Teachers Association (PIBG) chairman Shamsol Abdul Aziz.

 

In his speech, Chow congratulated the school on its remarkable journey over the past 140 years.

“A 140-year journey is no small feat. It represents a long history filled with challenges, achievements, and the preservation of traditions since the school’s founding.

 

“From its modest beginnings, SGGS has grown into a prestigious institution that has produced thousands of outstanding students, not only excelling academically but also thriving in various professional and leadership roles,” Chow said.

 

He also highlighted the school’s vital role in shaping generations of quality human capital for the state and the nation.

 

“SGGS is not just a place of learning, but a nurturing ground for values, leadership, integrity, and identity among young women.

 

“Many national figures, community leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and top professionals have walked through the halls of SGGS, an institution whose contribution to nation-building is profound and immeasurable,” he added.

 

Chow also expressed his admiration for the school’s continued excellence in education and shared his hopes for SGGS’s future.

 

“I am confident that SGGS will continue to play a pivotal role in developing future leaders, not just for the nation but also the world.

 

“To the educators, continue your vital work in shaping the nation’s future. To the students, embrace every learning opportunity with heart and dedication.

 

“And to the alumni and wider community, continue to support SGGS with your contributions, ideas, and expertise,” he concluded.
