SJK (C) Li Hwa from Butterworth emerged as the overall champion at the 5th Chief Minister Cup Interschool Table Tennis Championships 2025, marking a historic victory for the school.
The two-day tournament last week recorded its largest turn-out of 288 teams, 705 players and 80 participating schools.

The competition concluded after two days of intense matches among young players across various age categories.
Penang Table Tennis Association (PTTA) adviser and organising chairman Datuk Ang Aing Thye said participation in the tournament has grown steadily each year, with this year’s record numbers reflecting strong support from schools, parents and students.
“We are grateful for the tremendous enthusiasm and participation. This tournament has become a key platform to identify and nurture more young talents for Penang,” he said.

Ang added that the event plays an important role in preparing local players for next year’s Sukma where Penang aims to field a strong team.
With participation continuing to rise, Ang said organisers would look into improving future editions by reviewing the maximum number of entries, competition schedules and duration to ensure smoother coordination.

“Given the growth, we will need to consider adding more match days or adjusting the structure next year so that all games can run efficiently,” he said.
He also thanked the Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for five consecutive years of support and funding, which have allowed the association to host the annual event successfully.
