TRAFFIC along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah has been generally smooth and under control following the implementation of a road diversion in front of SJKC Kwang Hwa and SJKC Shih Chung (Branch) yesterday.

According to Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Chan Soon Aun, the monitoring team reported that traffic flow today was better than on the first day of implementation.

The road diversion, which began yesterday, was put in place to facilitate construction works for the Mutiara Line – Package CMC1 under the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.

“The diversion involves the leftmost lane along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah heading towards George Town, from SJKC Kwang Hwa to the Sungai Nibong police station. However, the other lanes remain open at all times to ensure traffic continues to flow as usual,” he said in a statement.

Prior to the implementation, officials from the MBPP Engineering Department, together with personnel from Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and SRS LRT Sdn Bhd, conducted a site visit on Jan 23, which was also attended by representatives from SJKC Kwang Hwa and SJKC Shih Chung (Branch). Both affected schools have made thorough preparations.

Throughout the construction period, SJKC Kwang Hwa allows parents’ vehicles to enter the school compound for student pick-up and drop-off. School buses in the form of small vans are also permitted to enter the compound to pick up and drop off students at the area known as Rumah Biru.
