Sports groups urged to upgrade facilities

THE Penang government stresses on the importance of talent development, and sports is no exception.

State Youths and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said proper facilities and equipment were needed to mould sportsmen and sportswomen.

“A conducive environment, as well as better facilities and equipment can instill confidence and boost the morale of athletes,” he said before presenting the wushu training carpet to Penang Ladies Chin Woo Athletic Association in Anson Road today.

The Penang Wushu Association had started collecting funds some four years ago to purchase a new training carpet.

Soon said the old training carpet was over 20-years-old.

“The new training carpet was bought from China at a cost of about RM80,000.

“Thanks to the contributions from the public, my office and kind sponsors, the association managed to raise enough fund,” Soon said.

Also present were president of Wushu, Lion and Dragon Dance Association Penang president Datuk H’ng Ban Choon, and of Wushu Federation Academy founders Jack Lim and Vincent Khor.

The Penang Wushu Association currently has some 800 to 1,000 students.
