THE state government has teamed up with the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Kindergarten in Penang to provide early education opportunities for children from B40 and underprivileged families, as part of its ongoing effort to strengthen family development and reduce social issues.

State Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said the collaboration aimed to ensure that every constituency receives equal attention and that children from needy backgrounds are given a fair start in life.

“Today’s programme focuses on identifying the needs of each community and helping those who require support to come forward and receive education and guidance.

“Education is not only about academics, but it’s also about shaping behaviour and building character for a better future,” she said during her visit to Buddhist Tzu-Chi Kindergarten in Macalister Road today.

Lim, who is the Sungai Pinang assemblyman, said two sessions were held today — the first in Seberang Perai, and the second on Penang island at noon.

She praised Buddhist Tzu-Chi Kindergarten for its dedication, expressing her admiration for the centre’s consistent efforts to nurture both academic development and personal growth among children.

Lim, who has been active in family welfare programmes in Sungai Pinang, said special attention was being given to families from single-parent or low-income backgrounds.

“We don’t just look at students’ academic results, but also how they behave, how they grow, and the kind of individuals they become,” she added.

She also announced that a seminar would be held later this month to engage parents and guardians in discussions on effective parenting and family values.

“When families are loving and supportive, social problems can be reduced,” Lim said.

Buddhist Tzu-Chi Kindergarten manager Chung Lian Hong emphasised that the goal was to promote free education and realise the vision of educational equity.

“As the principal of this centre, I extend our sincerest gratitude and a warm welcome on behalf of the entire team.

“Our mission is to ensure that every child, regardless of family background, can study with peace of mind and grow up happily in an environment free from financial burdens.

“We firmly believe that education holds the power to transform lives and create hope for the future,” she said.

Among those present during the engagement session were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Koay Gaik Kee, representatives from certain state constituencies, and members of the kindergarten’s staff.
