THE Penang government has yet to engage in discussions with relevant stakeholders regarding the installation of physical barriers or safety nets on the Penang Bridge, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The Penang Bridge, officially known as Jambatan Pulau Pinang, is owned and managed by PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PMB), the country’s largest highway concessionaire.

However, Chow acknowledged that the proposal to instal such safety measures is worth considering, especially in light of concerns about suicide prevention and public safety on the iconic bridge.

“I believe the installation of physical barriers and safety nets has been implemented on several bridges around the world.

“As such, this is a proposal that deserves serious consideration, and we are open to bringing it up with PMB and other stakeholders,” Chow told reporters when asked about the issue.

He was speaking earlier at the Amanah Pulau Pinang Hari Raya Open House held in Sungai Dua today.
