PERAK Road Market, which is considered one of the oldest markets on Penang island, is slated to be refurbished for the convenience of traders and market-goers.

Built in 1951, the 71-year-old market had been renovated numerous times, but its structure has not changed much.

The market, located under the Jelutong parliamentary constituency and the Batu Lancang state constituency, is one of the busiest markets on Penang island.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who visited the market under the ‘Jelajah ❤️ Penang’ programme, said there are plans to rebuild the market.

“Two open tenders had been called for the rebuilding works to be carried out previously, but it has since been halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“A third tender will be called, and we hope it will be a success this time around.

“The traders and market-goers have been awaiting this initiative to materialise.

“There is also a plan to develop a commercial development at a parcel of land beside the Perak Road Fire Station,” he told reporters after distributing Jalur Gemilang to the traders and market-goers in Jalan Perak Market this morning.

It was Chow’s 10th parliamentary constituency visit under the ‘Jelajah ❤️ Penang’ programme. The other three remaining parliamentary constituencies to be visited are Bagan, Bukit Gelugor and Tanjong.

Earlier, Chow with Jelutong MP R.S.N Rayer, Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong, and the service centre staff, gave Jalur Gemilang to the traders and market-goers at the Perak Road Market.

They were warmly greeted during their walkabout in the market by its traders and market-goers.

In another programme, Chow, Datok Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo, Ong and Rayer officially launched the ‘❤️ Penang’ signage at a roundabout in Taman Free School.

Chow said each parliamentary in the state would have the ‘❤️ Penang’ signage installed.
