THE welfare of the occupants in old housing schemes in Penang is always looked into by the state government.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo (PH-Datok Keramat) said the occupants under Urban Redevelopment City (URC) projects would be allocated a larger unit with other facilities included.

“We want to form a sustainable development in the city, through the affordable homes initiative that has been implemented by the state.

“It is also important to generate a vibrant economy to have a quality living environment and neighbourhood.

“We hope to engage the community and stakeholders together in our initiative,” he said when replying to an oral question by Daniel Gooi (PH-Pengkalan Kota) during the State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

Gooi had earlier asked about the progress of URC in the state.

Jagdeep said the state had approved the URC guidelines in September last year.

“The state, through the Penang Housing Board, has listed five pilot projects under the such initiative.

“The projects are Mahsuri 5 Point Block, Bayan Baru; Taman Free School flats; Padang Tembak flats; Taman Siakap in central Seberang Perai district and Mak Mandin flats,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is now planning to upgrade the food complex at Taman Tun Sardon.

“We hope to provide various amenities for the public. MBPP is looking at the maintenance of toilet cleanliness at the complex,” he said.

Jagdeep was replying to an oral question posed by Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Seri Delima) during the session.
