THE first Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Penang, which houses the government agencies, is set to generate business growth in the vicinity.

The UTC in Komtar, a Federal Government initiative under the Finance Ministry, is aimed at providing government and private sector services to the people under one roof. It is set to be fully operational by next month.

Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng said that the establishment of UTC could revitalise and promote economic overflow to the businesses in the state administrative complex.

“It can help to boost businesses in Komtar and provide opportunities for the traders to increase their income.

“As the Komtar assemblyman, I am absolutely delighted with the setting up of UTC in Komtar.

“As far as I know, there are 13 agencies to be housed at UTC in Komtar,” he told Buletin Mutiara during an interview in Komtar today.

Among the agencies that will operate in UTC Komtar are Public Services Commission, Royal Malaysian Police, Immigration Department, Health Department, National Higher Education Fund Corporation, Road Transport Department, Inland Revenue Board, Telekom, National Registration Department and JobsMalaysia.

Teh said that the announcement of the opening of UTC Komtar would be made by the Finance Ministry.

Commenting on the possibility of vehicles overcrowding the area once the UTC is opened, Teh said there are plenty of parking lots available.

“It should not be a problem as there are also traffic personnel manning the traffic,” he said.

The RM10.38 million project was earlier scheduled to complete in March this year. However, it was postponed due to the movement control order (MCO).
