FOOD, culture, and history are the key attractions for most travellers from Thailand.

The consul-general of Thailand in Penang Raschada Jiwalai said visitors from Thailand appreciate the Thai heritage in the state, besides the renowned street food in Penang.

“Visitors from Thailand can relate to Penang in many ways. One is the Jalan Khaw Sim Bee, named after the influential Khaw Sim Bee, who introduced rubber plantations into Thailand.

“Jalan Mano and Solok Mano were named after the first elected Thai Prime Minister Phaya Manopakorn Nititada,” he said after attending the networking session between the Bangkok-Hatyai travel agents and the media at Cititel Penang this afternoon.

Some 30 travel agents and media personnel from Bangkok and Hatyai took part in a 3D2N familiarisation trip in Penang from today until Dec 17.

The delegates will be experiencing both Penang island and Seberang Perai during their visit to the state.

Among the attractions are Kampung Agong, Bertam Resort and Water Park, Hin Bus Depot Sunday market, Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm, Tropical Spice Garden, Penang Hill, and The Habitat Penang Hill.

They will also explore the captivating history of George Town as they glide through its streets on trishaws.

Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan said while Penang is known for its street food and street arts in George Town, there are many more other attractions that the state could offer travellers.

“The state has many hidden gems and green attractions to cater to a wide range of visitors.

“For example, Penang has the serene Balik Pulau, and the Kampung Agong in Seberang Perai. These attractions are gems for visitors to explore,” Ooi said.

Ooi added that the state also has programmes throughout the year.

“There are various programmes and celebrations in Penang. So, there is always something new in Penang for tourists to experience when they visit the state,” he told Buletin Mutiara.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai highlighted the significant potential within the region, emphasising the advantageous geographical proximity between Penang and southern Thailand.

“With accessible road connections, this strategic location creates a promising market for the state’s tourism and creative economy.

“Furthermore, Penang benefits from 29 weekly direct flights from Thailand, operated by three distinct airlines, offering added convenience for tourists,” he said.

Wong also commended the meticulously crafted 3D2N familiarisation trip orchestrated by PGT and the Songkhla Chamber of Commerce.

“This vital initiative plays a pivotal role in spotlighting Penang’s diverse tourism offerings to travel agents and media representatives in Thailand.

“It provides a valuable opportunity for travel agents and media professionals to acquire a comprehensive understanding of Penang.

“Building on the success of the Penang roadshow in Bangkok and Hatyai last year, organised by PGT, these ongoing efforts reflect a dedicated and continuous initiative to promote Penang within the Thai market,” he said.

Also present at the networking session were Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong.
