THE Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Penang Chapter is looking forward to welcoming thousands of visitors to the Matta Fair Penang 2022.

The signature event will be held at the Setia SPICE Arena on Aug 20 and 21.

Organising chairman Carolyn Leong said the association expected to receive a strong crowd as international borders in various countries had opened or had begun to open.

“Many people are keen to travel after more than two years of restriction, and Matta Fair Penang is a one-stop platform for all travel products.

“The fair will showcase domestic and international destinations. We have received a great response from various tourism industry segments, such as hoteliers, theme parks, family attractions, cruises, transport operators, state tourism board, national tourism board, airlines, and our creative inbound and outbound travel agents.

“We understand that some people may prefer to travel closer to home for now. Countries such as Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, and Vietnam are among the popular destinations,” she said.

Matta Penang Chapter chairman Vergis Mathew said the association was surprised when 101 booths out of the 160 available booths for the Matta Fair Penang 2022 were taken up just three weeks after they were launched.

“The last Matta Fair Penang was held in 2019 and we received about 24,000 visitors over three days. Matta Fair Penang 2019 recorded about RM30 million in sales,” he told a media conference at the Matta Penang Chapter office in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah yesterday (June 23).

Mathew said there are some slight changes this year.

“The event will only take place for two days and it will only be held at the Arena level,” he said.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is the official airline for the Matta Fair Penang 2022 and has contributed air tickets for the ‘Buyer’s Draw’.
