Sungai Jelutong undergoing flood mitigation works

THE food mitigation project at Sungai Jelutong (stream from Sungai Pinang) has already got off the ground.

State Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said RM751,000 has been allocated for the mitigation project by the state government.

“The allocation is to help rectify the occurrences of flash flood in the neighbourhood of Solok Van Praagh which is a low lying area,” said Zairil at the press conference held nearby the Sungai Jelutong on Aug 29.

According to Zairil, the project is divided into two phases.

The first part involves the setting up a pond (1316.10 metre square ) nearby the construction site of ‘Setia Sky Ville’, costing RM351,000.

A flood wall as high as 1metre will be built along the Sungai Jelutong (right and left) as well.

The developer of the  ‘Setia Sky Ville’ will be involved in the building of the pond and the fllood wall.

The project, which commenced on Aug 26, will be completed on Nov 26.

The second part is the construction of the dry pond  with the capacity of 1,000 cubic metres, costing RM400,000.

Zairil said that the dry pond would be built nearby the residential area at the Solok Van Praagh which frequently gets affected by the flash floods.

“Culvert box will be installed as well as the
one-way tidal valve (duck like shape).

“This project includes roadworks, relocation of utility and re-construtuon of the road furniture’s,” he added.

The project will start on Dec 1 and will end on June 30 next year.

Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong expressed hopes that the project would bring a great relief to the 200 over residents in Solok Van Praagh when it is completed.

The  Department of Drainage and Irrigation (JPS Penang) will also be involved in the  upgrading of Sungai Jelutong
