Taiwan’s Peking opera troupe to perform at GTF 2024

ATTENTION Peking Opera lovers! Here is some exciting news for you: the world-famous GuoGuang Opera Company is set to perform at the George Town Festival 2024 in July.

 

But before their big performance in July, a touring group from the GuoGuang Opera Company will visit Penang in May to present the beauty of Peking opera.

 

The troupe’s sole outreach and sharing session in Penang will be held at the Penang Youth Centre on May 2, starting at 8 pm.

 

This sharing session will feature a talk by troupe chief executive officer Chang Yu-hua, followed by a demonstration of martial arts performances.

 

The special event is designed to encourage interest in and deepen appreciation for Peking opera.

 

While admission is free, registration is required due to limited spaces.

 

Established in 1995, GuoGuang is Taiwan’s only national Peking opera troupe, renowned for blending modern ideas with traditional opera, keeping the genre fresh and relevant.

 

During the George Town Festival (GTF) 2024, on July 20 and 21, the troupe will present ‘Double Bill of Magic Jingju Art,’ featuring two classic excerpts called ‘Avenging Zidu’ and ‘Zhuangzi Tests His Wife’.

 

This event is supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and National Center for Traditional Arts, as well as the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia.
