BLENDING cultural heritage with hands-on science learning, Tech Dome Penang successfully hosted its ‘Festive with STEM: Chinese New Year Edition’, drawing 200 students from various schools and organisations in Penang.
The programme aimed to spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through interactive exhibits, engaging workshops, and festive-themed activities.
It was held today at Tech Dome Penang in conjunction with the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration. It was further enlivened by an energetic lion dance performance.
Bagan Jermal assemblyman Chee Yeeh Keen, who was the chief guest, highlighted the importance of providing students with opportunities beyond the classroom as it allows students to explore their interests, build confidence and discover their potential.
“Programmes like Festive with STEM play an important role in sparking interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a fun and engaging way.
“What makes this programme special is how it connects festive traditions with STEM learning.
“When students build, experiment and solve problems inspired by Chinese New Year themes, they see that science is not just a subject in school.It is part of everyday life, creativity and culture,” Chee said.
Chee sponsored the participation of 40 students from SJKC Chung Hwa Pusat in the celebration.
With the welcoming of the Year of the Horse, Chee encouraged students to embody its values of energy, perseverance, and forward momentum in their learning journey.
“I encourage all of you to carry this spirit in your learning journey. Be curious, work hard and never stop striving to improve.
“Participate actively, ask questions and enjoy the learning process. Do not be afraid to try new things. Every experience helps you grow and move forward,” he added.
Other sponsors include Kiwanis Penang Central, which supported the participation of 40 students from Pusat Jagaan Suria, SK Dato Keramat, and SK St Xavier.
Another sponsor is Flex Malaysia, which sponsored 80 students from SJKC Keow Kuang and SJKC Kay Sin.
Also joining the list of sponsors was Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon, who sponsored 40 students from SJKC Permatang Tinggi.
In addition to the STEM activities, students were treated to vibrant cultural performances by students from SMJK Phor Tay. The performances included singing, a Chinese orchestra presentation, and an exciting diabolo act.
