IN A fast-paced world driven by work pressure and constant digital distractions, the simple act of walking is being reintroduced as a powerful tool for mental wellbeing.
Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) is set to bring the community together for its upcoming Charity Green Parade 2.0: High Five for A Healthier Mind, a 4km fundraising walk aimed at promoting mental health awareness while raising funds for the hospital’s Dr J. Earl Gardner Fund.
The event will take place on April 26 at Gurney Plaza Alfresco, with a 7am flag-off. Participants will walk along a scenic route passing the Gurney Drive Roundabout and the iconic Gurney Bridge before looping back to the starting point. About 2,000 participants are expected to take part.
Launching the event, PAH chief executive officer Albin Phua said the hospital is building on the strong momentum from last year’s inaugural parade.
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome all of you as we officially launch Charity Green Parade 2.0 – High Five for A Healthier Mind,” he said.
“Last year, what began as a simple charity parade has grown into one of our signature community events, with strong participation and overwhelming support from corporates, many of whom were first-time partners with us.
“That encouragement has inspired us to continue and strengthen this meaningful journey,” he added.
This year’s edition places special emphasis on mental health, reflecting growing awareness of its importance in overall wellbeing.
“We want to remind our community that caring for our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies.
“Through this event, we hope to normalise conversations about mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage people to speak up and seek help when they need it,” Phua said.
Beyond mental health advocacy, the event continues to support the Dr J. Earl Gardner Fund, which provides financial assistance to underprivileged patients suffering from chronic illnesses requiring major surgeries, including scoliosis correction, limb amputation and spine procedures.
“Patients often face fear and uncertainty, while their loved ones carry emotional strain beside them, reminding us that mental wellbeing for both patients and caregivers matters just as much,” he added.
The hospital also expressed appreciation to its partners, including Gurney Plaza as venue partner and Eastern & Oriental Berhad for allowing the use of the Gurney Bridge, adding a unique experience to the parade route. Various departments and collaborators, including the Community Health Department, Physiotherapy Team, Adventist Bakery, registration partner Howei, and Ling in Art Therapy, are contributing to ensure a holistic and engaging programme.
The event will feature lucky draws, health screenings and mental health education booths, offering participants a meaningful Sunday morning with family and friends.
Registration is priced at RM45 per person, with a special group rate of RM35 per person for groups of 10 or more. Those unable to attend may also contribute directly to the charity fund.
