Techfest Live featuring Road-to-WCIT Malaysia opens

THE World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2020 will help to position Malaysia and Penang as the information technology (IT) gateway to Southeast Asia.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in his question and answer (Q&A) session during the Techfest Live featuring Road-to-WCIT Malaysia, emphasised the importance of innovation and technology to move forward.

“Thanks to WCIT, we are in conversation with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies which represent 90% of the world ICT market.

“Digitalisation is the way forward. It is the propeller for economic achievement.

“Penang will have to embrace digitalisation to remain attractive and relevant,” Chow said during the opening ceremony at Yeap Chor Ee building in China Street Ghaut today.

He hoped that the ICT companies would choose to invest in Penang after the event.

The three-day virtual fest started today (Nov 18) and will end this Friday (Nov 20).

The event would feature interactive programmes, while industry leaders would present the latest technology products and share some impact stories from across the globe.

Chow said he was overwhelmed and honoured that Penang was given the opportunity to host the prestigious information technology event.

“The last time Malaysia hosted it was back in 2008 in Kuala Lumpur.

“This is the second time that Malaysia is hosting it and Penang is chosen as the host.

Chow speaking during the Q&A session.

“We have been preparing for the grand event and was expecting thousands of participants here.

“However, as we are aware, the world is facing an unprecedented time in history.

“The state is embracing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. We will come out better and stronger, in line with the Penang2030 vision,” he said.

Chow added that the pandemic helped to speed up digitalisation efforts and the people’s acceptance towards technology.

Also present were state Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang, InvestPenang director Datuk Seri Lee Kah Choon, InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian and WCIT2020 Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Low Ngai Yuen.
