Trial project proposal for e-scooters in Bayan Baru

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has proposed a trial project for e-scooter use in the Bayan Baru area to alleviate congestion.

State Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye said the project is scheduled to start next year.

If successful, the state government will seek Transport Ministry approval to permit e-scooters on Bayan Baru roads.

According to the Road Traffic (Prohibition of Use of Certain Mobility Vehicles) Rules 2021, e-scooters are not allowed to be used on public roads.

H’ng (PH – Jawi) said the MBPP would be conducting the trial run with a private company.

“Before we could even do the trial run, we have to make sure the Bayan Baru area has the right infrastructure to accommodate the use of e-scooters.

“I would also like to highlight the issue with e-scooters in Kuala Lumpur where vehicles were left everywhere, and to avoid this from happening here, we are also looking into ensuring the vendor prepares parking spots for the e-scooters,” H’ng said during a press conference at the State Assembly Building in Light Street today.
