WITH the aim of assisting unlicensed roadside traders in Sungai Ara, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has identified two suitable locations to regularise their businesses.
MBPP councillor Muhammad Khairul Mohd Ali said the two designated sites are Lot 936 and Lintang Sungai Ara, located near Skycube Residence in Sungai Ara.
He noted that Sungai Ara has a large number of unlicensed roadside traders, many of whom have previously been issued compounds by MBPP for operating without licences as well as for other offences, including improper waste disposal that has caused inconvenience to nearby residents.
“However, the question is how long can MBPP continue issuing compounds? That is why we have decided to identify suitable areas under the city council’s jurisdiction where these traders can operate legally,” he said.
According to Muhammad Khairul, the initiative will initially involve seven roadside traders.
“MBPP will provide designated trading spaces, basic facilities, and official licences to enable them to conduct their businesses in a proper and regulated manner.
“Licensing is important because it provides protection to traders, especially in the event of unforeseen incidents or disasters,” he added.
He stressed that the programme specifically targets unlicensed roadside traders, with the aim of helping them continue their livelihoods while complying with local regulations.
“MBPP will also assist by providing essential utilities and basic amenities at the designated sites,” he said.
Muhammad Khairul expressed confidence that both locations will be ready for operation after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Speaking to Buletin Mutiara during an interview at Komtar today, he also revealed plans to establish an additional five new hawker sites in Bayan Lepas in the near future.
