PENANG has officially recorded two Covid-19 Omicron variant cases as of yesterday (Dec 26).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said he was informed by the state Health Department that the two cases were imported infections from abroad.

“They got infected when they returned from Saudi Arabia after performing the Umrah.

“Both of the patients are now under quarantine at the hospital for further observation.

“Contact tracing is also being conducted as a precaution.

“Until now, there are two Omicron cases in Penang and the state government takes this matter very seriously.

“We will take the necessary measures to ensure this variant does not spread among the community,” Chow told a press conference in Campbell Street after distributing 2021 calendars to traders and visitors today.

Also present were Chow’s political secretary Teh Lai Heng, who is also the Komtar assemblyman, and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.

Chow also reminded eligible Penangites to take their Covid-19 booster shots and continue to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“We have enough vaccination centres (PPVs), hospitals and clinics to cater for those who want to get their booster shots.

“As of now, this is our best defence against Covid-19.

“We want to avoid the Covid-19 infection among the community. So, everyone should play their role,” he said.
