A GROUP of workers from the often-overlooked 3D sector performing dirty, dangerous and difficult jobs were overcome with emotion today as their years of dedicated service were formally recognised during the state investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the 85th birthday celebration of the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Ramli Ngah Talib at Dewan Sri Pinang today.
Eight frontline workers from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) were conferred the Pingat Jasa Masyarakat (PJM), in recognition of their unwavering commitment and long-standing contributions to keeping Penang clean, safe and liveable.
The recipients from MBPP were Asmadi Ishak, Mohamed Noor Ismail, Mohamed Rasull Sultan and Pathmanathan Balakrishnan.
Representing MBSP were Azizul Abdul Rahman, Basri Haron, Shafizal Mahmud and Mohd Shamsol Shamsuddin.
Present to witness the meaningful occasion were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Penang Local Government and Town & Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, MBSP mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid, MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and other dignitaries.
Their presence reflected the Penang government’s continued commitment to recognising the invaluable contributions of 3D workers, whose efforts are essential in maintaining public hygiene, safety and order throughout the state.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Asmadi Ishak, Mohamed Noor Ismail and Mohamed Rasull expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon them.
Mohamed Rasull, who is nearing retirement, acknowledged that the nature of 3D work has always been challenging, but said dealing with unreasonable public complaints can be even more difficult.
“Our work is physically demanding, and we pour all our effort into keeping public areas clean. Yet, there are times when some people make unfair complaints, claiming we are not doing our jobs. It is truly disheartening when that happens,” he said.
Asmadi, meanwhile, shared that he had also experienced criticism throughout his career, but said such experiences had only strengthened his resolve.
“Instead of discouraging me, those criticisms became a source of motivation and inspired me to work even harder in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to me,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chow congratulated all eight recipients from MBPP and MBSP on receiving the prestigious honour.
“Congratulations to the ‘Yellow Heroes’ of MBPP and the ‘Orange Heroes’ of MBSP on being conferred these medals today.
“This recognition is deeply meaningful as it reflects the Penang government’s appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of our frontline workers who carry out some of the most demanding responsibilities.
“Workers in the 3D sector are truly our unsung heroes. They perform dirty, difficult and high-risk tasks to ensure that Penang remains clean, green and safe for the benefit of both residents and visitors,” Chow said.
He added that without their unwavering commitment and dedication, it would be difficult for Penang to realise its aspiration of becoming a smart, green and family-focused state that inspires the nation.
“May this recognition serve as a source of encouragement not only to the recipients, but also to all local council employees across the state to continue delivering their best service for the well-being of the people and the continued progress of Penang,” he said.
H’ng described the awards as one of the highest forms of recognition for the recipients’ dedication, sacrifices and unwavering commitment in carrying out their responsibilities.
“This recognition demonstrates that every contribution to public service is valued, regardless of one’s position or field of work.
“The success of any organisation depends not only on capable leadership, but also on the commitment, dedication and teamwork demonstrated by employees at every level.
“The medals presented today are not merely symbols of honour. They represent the highest recognition of the integrity, discipline, loyalty, commitment and sacrifices demonstrated by these officers throughout their years of service in the local councils,” he said.
H’ng added that the awards reflected the Penang government’s appreciation for every public servant, regardless of rank or job scope.
“Every role is significant and contributes meaningfully to the state’s development as well as the excellence of our public service delivery.
“I hope this recognition will inspire not only today’s recipients but also all members of the public service to continue carrying out their responsibilities with dedication, integrity, professionalism and a steadfast commitment to maintaining a culture of excellence,” he said.
