Waste segregation practice for a sustainable future

PULAU Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee has urged the community to be continuously involved in green initiatives for a sustainable environment.

Lee conveyed this message during the waste segregation programme launch at the Kampung Herriot in Pulau Tikus on April 28.

“I hope the local community will carry out recycling and waste segregation practice continuously for a sustainable environment.

“Congrats to MPKK Kampung Herriot for implementing this programme as well as encouraging the residents here to take up green initiatives such as this,” said Lee during opening speech at the event.

The programme was initiated by MBPP councillor P. Kaliyappan and it was also jointly organised by the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) of Kampung Herriot and Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

Also present was MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang, who shared some statistics regarding the recycling rate.

“In 2018, we (MBPP) have achieved 31.20% of recycling rate, so hope that this year the recycling rate will keep improving.

“Wherever we want to throw rubbish, it has to be segregated to recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste.

“The practices of waste segregation at source must be imparted to our younger generation as they are our ‘future’,” added Yew.
