THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is all geared up for the annual city walk event that will be held on Jan 1.

This programme, which is in line with the state government’s Penang Cleaner, Greener, Safer and Healthier campaign, is the joint effort of the MBPP working hand-in-hand with the Penang Adventurers’ Club (PAC),” said MBPP director of Management Services Mohamed Akbar Mustapha at a press conference on Oct 7 to announce the event.

The City Walk has been a yearly event since 2013 and has already been marked in our calendar as a must-have programme. This 2016 City Walk is even more significant because it acknowledges our raised status as a city from a mere municipal council since Jan 1 this year,” he added.

The 5km route begins at the Esplanade field and participants will pass by iconic heritage sites such as Fort Cornwallis, the Town Hall, Khoo Kongsi, Masjid Melayu, Lebuh Acheh, Sri Mahamariaman Temple, the Penang Peranakan Mansion and many others.

In previous years, the City Walk had attracted between 5,000 and 10,000 participants and for 2016, MBPP aims to attract as many as 15,000 people.

Also present were MBPP director for Social Services department Rashidah Jalaludin, PAC president Wong Pang Kong and representatives from the registration centres.

Entry fee for the walk is RM10 for those aged 13 and above while those aged between five and 12 will be charged RM5.

All participants will be given a T-shirt and those who complete the walk within two hours will be eligible for a lucky draw.

People with special needs and whose birthday falls on Jan 1 will be exempted from paying the entry fee.

Those interested to sign up for this event can contact Shariff (016-4555939) and Melvin (016-5590073) between 9am and 5pm as well as Wong PK (012-5435612) from 12pm to 9pm or email [email protected].
