PENANG’s Wilson Yeoh Wei Sin capped a strong Malaysia Games (SUKMA) gymnastics campaign by clinching a share of the gold medal in the men’s individual horizontal bar final at Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak (DECTAR), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), today.
Wilson produced a score of 12.450 points, finishing joint-first with Kelantan’s Nor Adam Haziq, who also recorded 12.450 points, while Pahang’s Muhammad Zharfan took the bronze with 11.200 points.
The gold was another highlight for Penang’s artistic gymnastics squad, which exceeded coach Tan Teik Jin’s initial target of three to five gold medals, with the team securing four golds during the competition.
Tan, 29, said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance, particularly the fighting spirit shown by his gymnasts when competing in the finals.
“Today, they also did their best. Our target is quite fulfilled because my target was three to five golds. They did their best and they were really spirited in the final.
“As a coach, I am quite happy and I really appreciate their hard work. I think it is a good result because we got four golds. Everything is quite good, he said.
Tan also reflected on the team’s two gold medals won yesterday in the pommel horse and ringsevents.
He described the pommel horse victory as particularly challenging after the Penang gymnast fell during the routine, only to recover and continue his performance.
“The pommel horse was quite risky, actually, because the athlete fell down from the pommel horse. But we still got the gold because after he stood up, he continued the routine.
Land performed quite well.
“The difficulty was quite high, so even though he fell, we still managed to get the gold for pommel horse,” he said.
Tan was equally pleased with the performance in the rings event, praising the gymnast for executing a smooth and powerful routine.
“For the rings, the athlete performed well. Everything was smooth and quite powerful, and everything was good with the routine,” he said.
With SUKMA Selangor 2026 now nearing its conclusion for the team, Tan said Penang’s focus would soon turn towards the next edition, with the squad determined to maintain its standards while improving its gold-medal tally.
“We also aim for the next SUKMA. For the team, we also aim for gold,” he said.
For Wilson, the joint gold on the horizontal bar provided a fitting conclusion to Penang’s impressive gymnastics showing at DECTAR, as the squad looks to build on its success in future editions of SUKMA.
