INVESTMENT , Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Penang’s position as a premier investment destination in the region.
This pledge came as he was conferred the Darjah Panglima Pangkuan Negeri (DPPN) award, which carries the title Dato’ Seri, in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang’s 84th birthday celebration during the state’s investiture ceremony at Dewan Sri Pinang today.
“I thank the Yang di-Pertua Negeri and the state government for this honour.
“At MITI, we will continue to do all we can to ensure Penang remains a preferred destination for investors in the years ahead,” Zafrul said when met with reporters earlier.
A seasoned financial expert, Tengku Zafrul, 52, brings with him more than two decades of experience in banking and investment.
Born in Kuala Lumpur on June 25, 1973, he received his early education at SK Sri Petaling and Sekolah Menengah Bukit Bintang before attending the prestigious Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). He later pursued A-Levels at Sherborne School in the UK.
Zafrul holds a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Economics and Accounting from the University of Bristol, and a Master’s degree in Finance and Management from the University of Exeter, both in the United Kingdom.
Before entering public service, he held top positions in several of Malaysia’s leading financial institutions, including serving as Group chief executive officer and executive director of CIMB Group Holdings Berhad.
He also held key roles at Maybank Group, Citigroup Malaysia, Kenanga Holdings Berhad, and Avenue Securities.
Notably, Zafrul co-founded Tune Money Sdn. Bhd., Asia’s first online financial services platform.
His contributions extend beyond the financial sector. He has served as a member of the APEC Business Advisory Council, representing Malaysia’s private sector voice in regional trade and investment discussions.
He also served as a board member of the National Sports Council and a trustee of the Perdana Leadership Foundation, and currently holds the honorary title of Commander of the Royal Malaysian Navy Volunteer Reserve.
A total of 1,530 individuals are expected to receive state awards, medals, and honours.
Today was the second day as the first day kicked off on July 26.
