20,000 Penang teens get vaccinated against Covid-19

SOME 20,000 school students, aged 16 and 17 in Penang, have been inoculated under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme for Adolescents since the programme begin on Sept 23.

The vaccination programme is aimed at vaccinating as many students as possible in view of the nationwide school reopening in stages beginning Oct 3.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said this also shows a good acceptance among parents to send their children for vaccination.

“Overall, we have around 43,000 school students aged 16 and 17 in the state.

“And from that number, about 20,000 of them have been vaccinated as of now.

“Thus, we are confident that the number will continue to increase when more parents send their children in the following days.

“After all, no one is fully protected until everyone is vaccinated,” said Soon during his visit to the PPV Vangohh Eminent Hotel in Machang Bubuk today.

Also present were Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon and Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling

According to Soon, school dropouts are also encouraged to get their vaccine.

“But, they must come along with their parents or guardian to fill in the consent form,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lee reminded everyone to always adhere strictly to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) although they have been vaccinated.
