THE new direct air service between Penang and Batam is expected to generate economic benefits for the state by attracting more Indonesian visitors and supporting local businesses.

Launched on Oct 18, the Batam–Penang route sees Batik Air operating three direct flights a week between the two destinations, strengthening Penang’s air connectivity with Indonesia.

In an interview with Buletin Mutiara, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the route could generate economic returns beyond tourism by benefiting businesses across various sectors.

“Their visits will generate economic benefits for Penang’s tourism ecosystem, supporting local businesses across various sectors, including transportation, accommodation, food and beverage, tour services and retail,” he said.

Wong said the state government’s priority was to ensure the route generated sustainable tourism demand, created business opportunities for local businesses and strengthened Penang’s connectivity with Indonesia.

Penang recorded 279,290 Indonesian passenger arrivals from January to August 2026, highlighting the importance of the Indonesian market to the state’s tourism industry.

“As more travellers arrive, their spending on accommodation, transportation, dining, shopping, tour services and local attractions can generate a multiplier effect across Penang’s tourism economy.

“Beyond immediate tourism spending, the route also provides a platform for stronger business connections and closer tourism cooperation between Penang and the Riau Islands,” Wong said.

He added that the route’s success should be measured not only by passenger numbers but also by its wider contribution to Penang’s tourism economy and the long-term sustainability of the air service.

To maximise the benefits, the state government will work closely with airlines, travel agencies and tourism industry partners in both markets to convert improved connectivity into actual visitor arrivals.

Wong said the state government would also continue working with Batik Air and tourism industry players in Penang and Batam to provide support and facilitate coordination where necessary.

Penang currently receives 85 scheduled direct flights a week from Indonesia, comprising 42 from Medan, 31 from Jakarta, five from Surabaya, four from Banda Aceh and three from Batam.
