Belgium sets up consulate in Penang

BELGIUM has set up a consulate in Penang and is looking forward to enhancing bilateral ties and exploring business opportunities.

Its Ambassador to Malaysia, Pascal Gregoire, paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the latter’s office in Komtar today.

Accompanying him were its embassy’s deputy head of mission Pierrick Massaux and honorary consul to Penang Michel Van Crombrugge.

Gregoire, who last visited Penang with his wife over two years ago, said he hoped to promote his country to the people of Penang.

“There is a lot for us to improve. Belgium is also noted for its food industry. We too produce Pfizer vaccines,” Gregoire said.

Van Crombrugge added that he would do his best to make his country more well known to the people here as well as help promote Penang to his people.

Chow, who warmly welcomed Gregoire and his team, said the setting up of Belgium’s consulate would help to promote bilateral ties.

“There are not many Belgian companies in Penang and there are opportunities to explore.

“We did well in the manufacturing sector although the Covid-19 pandemic has still caused a lot of disruptions.

“I see the services sector will be picking up. With Malaysia opening its borders to international visitors on April 1, I don’t expect an influx of tourists immediately. But this is the first step to receiving more tourists to the state and country.

“We’re the largest recipient of medical tourism in Malaysia, more than 50% came over to Penang before the lockdown. Now, a few hospitals are being built and we also hope to promote Batu Kawan as a medical hub other than E&E (electrical and electronics),” Chow said.
