RESPECTING every family member regardless of age is a fundamental value in building a happy family.

State executive councillor Chong Eng said this is important because from a happy family, it would lead to promoting a prosperous, peaceful and progressive society.

“Any decision making also must involve every family member to ensure that none of them is left out and to maintain harmonious relationships within the family.

“Husbands and wives should also be seen as equal partners because they share the roles and responsibilities in the development of the family.

“Each of the family members must also understand their own roles to be able to contribute effectively to their family and build towards a happy and harmonious family,” Chong Eng said in her speech during the closing ceremony of the Penang state-level Family Day 2020 celebration at Harmony Centre in George Town yesterday (July 25).

Her speech text was read out by Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim.

Also present was Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng.

Chong Eng, who is in charge of the state Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness & Religions Other Than Islam, said the state-level Family Day celebration for this year was conducted online for the first time under the new normal due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The celebration was held for one month from June 20 to July 20.

“I also urge the community and other organisations to work together with the state government to carry out or organise family-related activities to strengthen the family bonding,” she added.
