Drawing street food lovers to Carnavon Street

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) intends to transform the new hawker spot in Carnavon Street to become a famous attraction.

Its councillor Wong Yuee Harng said the council had prior to this shifted the hawkers from Chulia Street to Carnavon Street to improve the traffic flow in the area.

“All the hawkers who were located in Chulia Street had all moved to Carnavon Street now.

“We aim to create a well-known food street in the area and promote the local food at the same time.

The hawkers from Chulia Street have moved to Carnavon Street.

“There is a wide range of popular local food, including the famous wan tan mee and curry mee from Chulia Street.

“We are also planning to have a ‘Hawker Day’ next month to promote the place and its local food as well,” he said.

Wong foresees that the area can be a famous food street in the future.

“The relocation plan has been extended for more than two years due to Covid-19 pandemic.

“They (hawkers) can now have their businesses there in a proper place.

“Their operating hours remain the same, which is from 6pm to midnight, but some of them are opening and closing earlier,” he said.

Wong had yesterday visited the site with relevant authorities.
