VARIOUS exciting activities are all set to attract thousands of people to the Penang Green Council’s (PGC) booths during the World Environment Day celebration at the ground floor of Gurney Plaza this Sunday.

They include recycling work shops, collage arts homemade, and exhibitions which will be held from noon to 9pm at the shopping mall this weekend.

Penang Green Council (PGC) general manager Josephine Tan said the event aims to create awareness and emphasise the importance of protecting the environment.

“The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Nurturing the Earth, One Action at a Time’.

“All the exciting activities are awaiting people from all walks of life.

“They can bring their e-waste, beauty empties, tetra Pak, and carton boxes to our event this Sunday,” she told Buletin Mutiara.

Tan said the celebration would take place for the whole one month, through various activities virtually.

“We had previously cooperated with SJK (C) Moh Ghee Cawangan in Jelutong to carry out recycling programmes. We will work alongside other schools for similar initiatives in the future.

“During the event, primary school students will take part in creating artworks as well,” she added.

Regarding the state’s environmental initiatives, Tan highlighted the successful campaign in 2019 to reduce plastic bag usage.

“The people’s awareness has improved as more people have been educated. There is still room for improvement as we aim to educate the hawkers and market goers in the future.

“Bringing own lunch boxes has hygienic benefits over using plastics,” she said.

State Environment and Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh is expected to attend the event at Gurney Plaza.
