EVERY child has unique talents and strengths, and their potential should be measured by determination, hard work and a positive attitude rather than limitations, says Tan Lean Kee, wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
In her speech during the annual Sports Day of SJK(C) Shih Chung Pusat at Love Lane today, Tan said the event was more than a sporting competition, describing it as a celebration of courage, determination, friendship and the human spirit.
“Success is never measured by how fast we run or how high we jump, but by our willingness to try, persevere and never give up.
“To all our dear students, you are the true champions today. Each of you has your own unique talents and strengths.
“Some of you have overcome challenges that many of us cannot even imagine. Yet here you are smiling, competing, encouraging one another and showing us what resilience truly means,” she said.
Tan added that every child deserves encouragement and opportunities to pursue their dreams.
She also stressed that sports play an important role in character building and personal development.
“Sports are not only about winning medals. They teach teamwork, discipline, respect, perseverance and self-confidence.
“These are values that will remain with our children throughout their lives,” she said.
Tan also paid tribute to teachers and school staff for their dedication to nurturing students and creating an inclusive learning environment.
“Your work goes far beyond teaching. You nurture confidence, independence and hope in every student entrusted to your care,” she said.
She further thanked parents and caregivers for their unwavering support and sacrifices, describing them as their children’s greatest source of strength.
Tan also welcomed the strong collaboration among the school, parents, volunteers and the wider community in supporting the students.
She added that every participant should be recognised for their effort and courage.
“The loudest applause should not only be for those who finish first, but for everyone who has the courage to participate.
“Every child is a champion. Every effort deserves applause. Every dream deserves a chance,” she said.
MPKK Lebuh Chulia chairman Wong Chiew Lee highlighted the importance of sports in nurturing healthy habits, perseverance, courage and confidence among children.
She noted that sports hold special significance for children with special needs as they help improve physical coordination, concentration and social interaction.
The school’s headmistress, Low Siau Chew, said the annual sports day was not merely a sporting event but also a platform to strengthen family bonds through various parent-child activities.
“Such activities allow parents to better understand their children while giving children the opportunity to feel the love, care and support of their parents.
“For children with special needs, sports play an important role in improving physical coordination, concentration and confidence, while encouraging them to participate actively in group activities,” she said.
