Exco man calls for cooperation to realise zero-waste

WORKING towards zero-waste is hard, but it is possible if the public realise its importance and have a change of attitude, state executive council member Phee Boon Poh said.

Phee, who is the Penang Welfare, Caring Society, and Environment Committee chairman, said it required the cooperation from everyone.

“It’s not easy to educate the public on zero-waste.

“People are still wasting food. We can see still people throwing away food because they took too much but could not consume all of them.

“I am urging everyone to be bold to change. Start with ourselves, stop wasting food,” Phee said in his speech before officiating the Zero Waste Conference for the School Teachers at Lodge 18 Hotel in Butterworth today.

Also present was the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) acting president Mohideen Abdul Kader.

Phee also encouraged the public to buy ‘package-free’ products to minimise waste generation.

The programme was organised by CAP.

Mohideen said over 150 teachers in Penang took part in the programme.

“We hope to raise awareness among educators and encourage them to teach their students the importance of zero-waste.

“Teachers play an important role in educating and shaping the mindset of our children,” he added.
