PENANGITES are urged to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, business premises, offices, and vehicles throughout the 2026 National Month and Malaysia Day celebrations as a symbol of unity and love for the country.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that flying the national flag is far more than a symbolic act; it reflects a deep history of struggle, sacrifice, and solidarity that underpins a peaceful and sovereign Malaysia.
He stressed that every citizen must continue to protect and cherish the country’s independence by building a brighter future for generations to come.
“Every time the Jalur Gemilang is raised, it is not merely a piece of cloth fluttering in the wind.
“Behind every stripe and colour lies a history of struggle, sacrifice, and unity that forms the foundation of a peaceful and sovereign Malaysia.
“This flag-raising serves as a reminder that our independence must be preserved, cherished, and honoured through hard work for the future of coming generations,” He said during his speech at the Penang state-level Kibar Jalur Gemilang 2026 ceremony on the mainland earlier this morning.
Elaborating further, he stated that this year’s national theme, “Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati”, should be embraced by all citizens as a true reflection of the nation’s peace, stability, and inclusive progress.
“Penang continues to play a vital role in national development as one of the region’s most dynamic economic, investment, and innovation hubs, driven by the strength of its diverse races, religions, and cultures.
“In an increasingly challenging world, a state’s true strength is measured not just by economic numbers, but by the ability of its people to remain united, show mutual respect, and stand together on common ground. This is the foundation that enables Penang to enjoy peace and progress continuously,” he said.
Highlighting economic achievements, Chow noted that Penang remains a primary hub for the country’s electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor industries.
“Based on official data, Penang contributes over six per cent to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and accounts for nearly 38 per cent of the country’s total export value.
“This achievement proves that Penang is a key engine driving the Malaysian economy.
“In line with the Penang 2030 vision, the state government will continue strengthening development focused on innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and sustainability to create high-value jobs and ensure all enjoy prosperity,” he explained.
He emphasised that patriotism must not be seasonal, but practised daily through integrity, unity, and contributing to the state according to one’s role.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the event, Chow added that the campaign aims to renew Malaysians’ shared commitment to unity and love for the nation.
“This celebration gives everyone the opportunity to express loyalty to the King and nation.
“Differences in political views are normal, but they should never affect our unity or raise doubts regarding citizens’ loyalty to the country,” he added.
To mark the launch, he attached the Jalur Gemilang onto official government vehicles before flagging off a celebratory convoy of 75 vehicles, comprising 32 from state government agencies, 41 from federal departments, and two from the private sector.
Also present at the ceremony were Penang State Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang, Penang State Secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long, state executive councillors, state assemblymen, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid, Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Mohamed Abdul Rahman, and other dignitaries.
