SUNGAI Pinang Service Centre is set to provide free legal advice – ‘Legal Aid Night’ – for the residents in the neighbourhood and community at large on the third Wednesday of every month, 8pm to 10pm.
“December 19 will be the first (legal advice) session and those who need the legal assistance need to fill up the application form before attending the legal advice session at our centre.
“This is to allow the legal advisors to study the issues brought up so as to provide a comprehensive service to the applicants. The forms can be downloaded online or collected at the centre itself.
“We will be distributing flyers regarding the service to the residents in the Jelutong constituency (which also covers the Batu Lancang and Datok Keramat constituencies). This service is for all and not only for the people in the Jelutong neighbourhood,” said Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim during a press conference at her service centre.
According to Lim, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Nicholas Theng will also be joining the Legal Aid Night session to provide advice on matters that concern the council such as licensing and infrastructure issues.
The legal advisors Poon Lee Fah and Goh Chee Sun who were also at the press conference, welcomed lawyers to volunteer themselves in this community programme to provide legal assistance.
“It is advisable to pre-register prior to attending the session as this would help to us to study the matter and give accurate advice to them.
“But if we have time, we will also attend to those who walk-in as some people might not be well versed in filling up forms.
“We also call upon more lawyers to volunteer to provide this service for our community,” Poon and Goh said.
