Improving sports and recreational needs of the community

A SAFER and more conducive basketball court and jogging track are now available for the residents in the Taman Sunway Tunas neighbourhood in Bayan Baru to use for their recreational activities.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi said the upgrading work, which began on April 10, was completed on June 30. The project’s total cost was RM143,073.

Gooi said the works included the enhancement of the basketball flooring, electrical wiring, installation of floodlights, placement of basketball goal posts and upgrading of the jogging track.

“The upgrading work of the basketball ball court was done according to the standard measurements set by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

“We hope that the residents here will utilise the upgraded sports facility and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

“I would like to thank the former state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee for his initiative as well as for overseeing the project before I took over his portfolio,” said Gooi after officiating the basketball court today.

Gooi added that before any sports facility upgrades, the state government plans to hold an engagement session with the local community to understand their specific needs and preferences.

Meanwhile, state Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol, who is also the Pantai Jerjak assemblyman, said that sports play a pivotal role in uniting the community.

Also present were Penang Basketball Association president Thor Chai Shing and Jalan Tengah Utara Village Community Management Council (MPKK) chairman Teh Tian Chuan.
