Indah Water urged to speed up repair works on damaged sewage pipe in Sungai Pinang

SUNDAY is not really a fun day for many residents and road users along Jalan Sungai Pinang in George Town today due to major repair works on a damaged sewage pipe that are currently ongoing.

The problem has recurred several times now, which has greatly inconvenienced road users as it is regarded as one of the busiest roads in Sungai Pinang.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer said Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), as the immediate federal-based agency that directly manages the sewage system, should speed up its efforts to fix the problem as soon as possible.

“Three to four days ago, I was notified by the authorities that IWK would be blocking one of the two lanes to carry out the repair works there.

“My request for IWK is to ensure that the ongoing problem be fixed once and for all this time.

“This is definitely causing a lot of discomfort among the residents here and certainly irritating the road users.

“The Penang government has always put the safety and security of the people at the forefront, and there can be no compromise on that.

“But we sincerely hope the public will be able to cooperate with us on this matter as IWK has been urged to complete the repair works as soon as possible,” Rayer told a press conference at the site in Jalan Sungai Pinang today.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Engineering Department director A. Rajendran had said that since other utilities owned by the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) were installed underneath as well, IWK needed to carry out the repair works carefully without potentially causing damage to them.

“MBPP views this situation seriously and due to the need to ensure this problem be fixed, we have to allow IWK to block the affected spot for repair works to be carried out,” Rajendran said.

One of the representatives from IWK, who wanted to remain anonymous, has vowed to complete the repair works by the end of next week.

He said this could be done if they are not delayed by any bad weather.

Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim appealed to IWK to show serious attention in completing the repair works and not delay it anymore.

“We have received one too many complaints from residents and road users here. We understand their plight, and we hope IWK will speed up their works,” she said.
