THE Health Ministry has not issued any specific alert regarding influenza cases, as the situation remains under control, says Penang Health Department director Dr Zulhizzam Abdullah.
Dr Zulhizzam said members of the public diagnosed with influenza should seek medical treatment and follow their doctors’ advice, including taking the necessary medical leave to facilitate recovery and prevent the spread of infection.
“The authorities has not issued any specific alert on influenza. The public should remain calm and continue practising preventive measures to protect themselves and others,” he told Buletin Mutiara.
He stressed that health promotion and disease prevention remain important in curbing the spread of influenza and other respiratory illnesses.
Among the recommended measures are maintaining good hand hygiene through regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of hand sanitiser, as well as wearing face masks when experiencing cough or flu-like symptoms.
Dr Zulhizzam also encouraged individuals who are unwell to avoid exposing others to infection and to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
He added that those who are at higher risk of complications from influenza, including senior citizens and individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic heart disease and chronic respiratory disease, should consult their doctors regarding influenza vaccination.
“Individuals in high-risk groups may benefit from influenza vaccination based on their doctor’s assessment and advice,” he said.
Dr Zulhizzam reiterated that the department would continue monitoring infectious disease trends through its existing surveillance system while promoting greater public awareness on healthy lifestyles and preventive healthcare practices.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi also stated no increase in influenza cases in the state.
