Join run to help raise funds for cancer patients

THE ‘Incredible Run 2020’ to collect funds to help cancer patients and at the same time to raise awareness on cancer is now open for registration.

The first-ever run, organised by Bagan Specialist Centre (BSC) in collaboration with the Penang Hospice Society (PHS), is scheduled to take place at the Bagan Specialist Centre on Jan 5.

The 5km run will be flagged off at the field in front of the hospital at 7am. It will then lead the runners through Jalan Permatang Pauh and Raja Uda before ending at Jalan Bagan.

Bagan Specialist Centre managing director Dr Tan Hui Ling said the funds from the run would be channelled into ‘Palliative Radiotherapy Fund’ set up by BSC itself in collaboration with PHS.

“We are targeting to raise RM150,000 for those who are in most need of palliative radiotherapy.

“This is a one-time financial assistance scheme to alleviate the financial burden of cancer patients who are in need of palliative radiotherapy.

“Palliative radiotherapy is intended to control or relieve cancer-related pain and other symptoms and to help patients maintain a good quality of life when long-term cancer control is not possible.

“Thus, I believe this fund and its purpose will mean a lot as well to many cancer patients out there and their families as well,” Dr Tan told a press conference at Bagan Specialist Centre in Butterworth today.

Also present were state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee and Bagan Specialist Centre acting chief executive officer Cheow Jen Hurn.

According to Cheow, cancer patients who are in need of that fund, can start to apply for financial assistance from Jan 5.

“They can get the form from BSC Cancer Care Department or from PHS,” he said.

Soon commended BSC for its efforts in organising the run.

“Not only is this run a great way to promoting good health and healthy lifestyle, but it is also a great move to aid patients affected by cancer.

“And I thank Bagan Specialist Centre as many people suffering from the disease may benefit from this financial assistance scheme to ease their financial burden,” Soon said.

Cheow said the run is open to participants of all ages, with a registration fee of RM60.

“Participants also will be entitled to a complimentary RM20 Health Screening Voucher on top of event T-shirt, finisher’s medal, goodie bag and a chance to win lucky draw prizes worth up to RM10,000.

“The prizes include Honda Wave Alpha Spoke, Venessa Diamonds gift set, TV and hotel stay by The Light Hotel,” he said.
