THREE mural projects have been planned to beautify and further enhance the heritage value of Lebuh Buckingham and its surrounding areas.
It is understood that one of the three mural components has already been completed on the front wall of Kompleks Lebuh Buckingham.
The 50-metre mural features a series of illustrations depicting the historical significance of the Lebuh Buckingham area and the vicinity of Kapitan Keling Mosque.

The other two components involve floor mural paintings along Lebuh Buckingham and at the adjoining road junction.
The mural project was implemented by the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) from June 3, 2025, to Dec 3, 2025.
The initiative is led by the Federal Government through NCER in collaboration with the Penang Bumiputera Development Council (MPBPP), to ensure that the heritage trail of the Muslim enclave in Lebuh Buckingham is developed in tandem with the surrounding urban progress.
NCER was subsequently granted a permit for the mural by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) on Nov 14, 2025, and the mural was completed on Nov 28, 2025.
Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief operating officer Hasri A. Hasan said the project is also a joint effort between NCIA and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) in the Prime Minister’s Department.

“We also collaborated with stakeholders from the state government, such as MBPP, Wakaf Penang Islamic Religious Council (Wakaf MAINPP), and others.
“NCIA would like to express its appreciation to all parties who have provided strong cooperation in helping us realise this project.
“The objective of this project is to highlight and elevate the heritage value so that tourists, as well as local residents, can better appreciate the existing heritage within the George Town area, particularly the heritage related to the local community here.
“We hope that with the completion of this project, it will further enhance Penang’s reputation as a leading heritage tourism destination in the country,” he told Buletin Mutiara during a site visit today.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who also joined the site visit, said the project aims to highlight the local heritage value in the Tanjong or George Town area to attract tourists while fostering greater appreciation among local residents.

“This project is also seen as a recognition of the contributions of earlier generations, including traders, artisans, goldsmiths, money changers and the local Indian Muslim/Muslim community.
“It is hoped that the project will elevate Penang’s profile as a key heritage destination in Malaysia while helping visitors better appreciate the history and contributions of the local community.
“I would also like to thank the sponsors and contributors who helped realise part of the aspirations and requests of the community here,” said Chow.
Also present were MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, NCIA director (project delivery) Muhammad Fazlullah Abdul Aziz, Northeast District and Land Office district officer Ismasuhaimi Shariff, and Wakaf Penang Islamic Religious Council (Wakaf MAINPP) chief executive officer Abdul Mohsein Mohd Shariff.
