Local authorities focus on upgrading over 30 years old drainage systems

BOTH the local authorities, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), are concentrating on upgrading drainage systems older than 30 years to enhance their capacity to handle current rainfall.

State Transport and Infrastructure Committee Zairil Khir Johari (PH-Tanjong Bungah) said this when replying to an oral question by Chee Yee Keen (PH-Bagan Jermal) during the State Legislative Assembly today.

Zairil highlighted that the initial steps involve creating a list of priority areas for flood hotspots.

“Certified surveyors will then be appointed to conduct the level measurements and prepare utility plans for the prioritised flood hotspot areas,” Zairil said.

“Following this, a detailed design plan will then be prepared either internally by the local authorities for a small-scale study or else a consultant will be appointed for a large-scale study to upgrade the relevant drainage system.

“The allocations that are needed to implement the findings of the study can be requested through the state Flood Mitigation Committee (MMK) as well as to the Federal Government.

“This is according to the priority of the flood hotspot area.

“However, the implementation of the project is subject to the approval of the allocated funds obtained.”
