THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is preparing to introduce new compound rates and implement a revised duration for the payment of compounds.

Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran announced that to incentivise the public to promptly settle their fines, the old compounds dating back to 2008 will be reset starting from May 1 onwards.

“All fines issued from the year 2008 till now will be reset according to the new rates and individuals can settle their old compounds on May 1 and May 2.

“We hope the public will take this opportunity to settle their fines.

“As of now, we have some RM61 million outstanding amount not paid by the offenders.

“There are more than 100 types of compounds under the council,” Rajendran said after chairing the regular council meeting today at the City Hall.

Rajendran emphasised that MBPP will adopt a stricter approach towards repeated offenders and will pursue legal action against them.

Meanwhile, MBPP councillor Nicholas Theng said that the MBPP will only reset the compound and introduce a new payment period, not a discount.

“Of course, people can take advantage of this, but this (reset) will not happen all the time,” Theng added.

Theng also shared that those who are renting under the council’s housing scheme, with rental amounts below RM150, can subscribe the monthly parking pass at a special price of RM100 instead of the regular price of RM150, provided they are free of rental arrear.
